You have been prescribed ActiLymph Made-to-Measure (MTM) hosiery. Your hosiery should feel comfortable and fit well.

Different colours and styles are available, so talk to your nurse to find the garment which suits you best.

Compression hosiery is used as part of compression therapy treatment, often after treatment with bandages.

The hosiery assists the body move blood and lymph fluid back towards the heart. This should prevent swelling building up in the legs.

How will the stockings feel?

When you first start to wear the hosiery you may be more aware of it. After a whilemost wearers forget they have it on!

You too can enjoy lighter feeling legs, without swelling or aches.

Compression hosiery is generally worn for life. Discuss the hosiery with your nurses. This way you can find a style you will enjoy wearing.

There is a knack to getting your compression hosiery on. Watch the Activa hosiery self fitting video to make it as easy as possible for yourself.

If you still need some extra help, consider an ActiGlide hosiery applicator.

Washing Instructions

  • Hand wash only
  • Use a mild detergent
  • Never use fabric softener, bleach or bleaching agents, spot remover or chemical cleaning fluids
  • Rinse out the stocking until no soapy residue is present
  • Do not wring - the stocking will dry faster by rolling it tightly in a towel after washing. Then allow the stocking to dry naturally, either by hanging or laying it down
  • Do not dry the stocking in a tumble drier, near a stove, on the central heating or in the sun
  • Do not iron

Tips for wearing hosiery

  • Apply the hosiery first thing in the morning - ideally whilst still in bed
  • Be re-measured for hosiery every 4-6 months
  • Wash or change your hosiery at least every 2-3 days
  • Contact your nurse or GP immediately if your leg changes, particularly if it becomes red or painful.

Do not...

  • Ignore any knocks or scratches or swelling in your leg
  • Stop wearing your hosiery unless advised to do so

What else can I do to keep my legs healthy?

  • Elevate your legs when resting
  • Eat healthily
  • Exercise - walking is very good for your legs
  • Ideally, stop smoking
  • Moisturise regularly with a non perfumed moisturiser, but not just before putting on your hosiery
  • Keep toe and finger nails neatly trimmed to avoid snagging your hosiery

Application aids

With the MTM open toe stocking we include a pull-on sock. This makes the foot smoother and protects the stocking against sharp toenails.

Still want a bit more help getting your hosiery on? Then we recommend the use of the ActiGlide application aid for all open and closed toe stockings. The ActiGlide is available on prescription

Guarantee and Storage

As soon as you receive new stockings, you should start wearing them. Therapeutic compression hosiery has a limited life span, which includes the time when you are not wearing the stockings.

If you have several (pairs) of stockings, you should wear them in turn. Activa Healthcare give a guarantee of 6 months on the fit and product quality, commencing from the date the prescription was received.

The hosiery should be stored at room temperature and avoid exposure to direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
